Chan Boards are a type of online Forum or Bulletin Board, created in 2003, which allow users to post and discuss topics anonymously. The name hails from the term ‘channel boards’ created by a Japanese adolescent back in the late 1980s. The board can be used for a variety of purposes including debates on politics, conversations about current events, jokes and humorous stories, buying and selling goods, and it can even be used as an anonymous chat room.
While originally intended as a platform for like-minded people to converse with one another safely and without interruption by trolls or other malefactors, Chan Boards have become popularised over time – particularly amongst those seeking anonymity when posting sensitive topics (such as religion or politics). As such it should come as no surprise that more than 10 million topics have been posted across these networks.
In order to gain access to these anonymous forums users must first sign up and create an account – registration is free – after which they are able to post comments on any currently active topic. When registering each user chooses their own ‘handle’ – typically something related to pop culture references for example Spiderman69 or LogansGirl4ever – which is how they will be identified during the duration of their time on the message board.
As with any online network where anonymous postings hold sway there are dangers; cyberbullying, hateful language and false rumours travelling faster than greased lightning all make Chan Boards potentially dangerous arenas for younger users. However if managed correctly it can also become an incredibly valuable tool; providing solace for those seeking advice, tackling problems which may otherwise seem too personal to share anywhere else but online or simply an environment within which lively debates can take place in relative security.
Ultimately Chan Boards offer users an opportunity to engage in discourse sufficiently anonymous that brave conversations can be had without fear of retribution whilst still allowing othersn to comment seriously on the posted topics with some degree of objectivity and impartiality not available elsewhere – allowing debate at its truest form accessible across even the most controversial topics expected from social media sites.
